Chester William Nimitz, Sr. (/ˈnɪmɪts/; February 24, 1885 – February 20, 1966) was a fleet admiral of the United States Navy. He played a major role in the naval history of World War II as Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet and Commander in Chief, Pacific Ocean Areas, commanding Allied air, land, and sea forces during World War II. Charles Horatio McMorris was born August 31, 1890, in Wetumpka, Alabama. He graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in Annapolis in 1912 and received his commission in 1914. He achieved the rank of rear admiral in May 1942, and vice admiral in September 1944. McMorris died on February 11, 1954. From the description of McMorris, C. H.
